What is the Law of Attraction?


"You get what you give."
"What comes around goes around."
"Birds of a feather, flock together."
"As ye sow, so shall ye reap."


For thousands of years, mankind has known about the Law of Attraction. These popular sayings all point to the essence of the Law of Attraction. On the surface, this might sound like the idea of karma which developed in India and has spread to the West. However, the popular notion of karma is that good or bad things happen to you based on your actions. Doing good deeds leads to rewards whereas doing evil brings punishments. The Law of Attraction is a bit different. So what is it? Simple put, the Law of Attraction states that I attract into my life whatever I give my attention, energy, and focus to, whether wanted or unwanted.(1) So what does that mean? That means that not only what I do (actions), but also what I say (words) and what I think (thoughts) creates more of the same in my life.

Let's examine some simple examples that you have probably already experienced in your life. You are snug in your warm bed sleeping when suddenly your alarm clock goes off at 6:00 AM. It is Monday morning and you have a meeting first thing with your boss that you have been dreading. You crawl out of bed grumbling and smack your knee against the corner of the bed. Later as you are getting dressed, you find a run in your stockings or a stain on your shirt. Now running late, you try to catch up by preparing some things as you make your toast. But without watching that old toaster, now your toast is burnt. You end up leaving a little later than usual and now there is more traffic than you expected. You get to the office 15 minutes late and you boss is waiting for you in the meeting room. As you hurriedly plop down in your seat, you think to yourself, "I should have just stayed in bed."

Now it is Saturday and once again you are snug in your warm bed sleeping. Suddenly your alarm clock goes off at 6:00 AM but this time you jump right out of bed. You are going to a skiing trip with your best friend and you have to catch your plane at 8:30. All week long you have been talking about this trip; how much fun you will have, how much you love skiing. This morning you avoid whacking your knee on the bed and you find yourself ahead of schedule. That old toaster works perfectly this morning giving you golden brown toast. You set off for the airport but traffic is lighter than usual. As you get to the airport you find a parking place close to the entrance. As you find yourself skipping from the parking lot, you say to yourself, "This is the best day ever."

If you think about the people in your life, you can easily find evidence of the Law of Attraction in the lives of people you know. You probably know someone like this. He (or she) is always complaining about all the horrible things that happen to him. He will tell you are about his health problems. He will tell you about all his relationship problems. He will tell you how he hates his job and always has money problems. So are you surprised when you hear that his wife has left him, he got passed over for a promotion, and he now has diabetes? Now that you know about the Law of Attraction, you will not be surprised.

Perhaps you know someone like this. She (or he) always seems to have good things happen to her. No matter what cold or flu is going around, she never gets it. Money just seems to fall into her lap. In fact, the more money she spends, the more money she seems to have. She seems to get a new promotion every 6 months and she just loves her job. She has a loving and supportive partner and plenty of wonderful friends. She is just fun to be around and she always cheers up anyone who is near. Knowing the Law of Attraction, this too makes perfect sense.

In his book, Law of Attraction, Michael Losier explains the Law of Attraction by stating, "Whatever I give my attention, energy, and focus to, whether wanted or unwanted, I attract into my life."

Let's examine this definition and breakdown each part. "Whatever I give my attention, energy, and focus to" means that whatever things or ideas you think about, talk about, and act on. At first, this may worry you. Now I have to pay attention to everything I think about? However, if you think about this carefully, you will realize that you have complete control. You have a choice about what action to take or not take. You have the ability to select the words you use when you speak. While it may be difficult at first, you even have the ability to choose what you think. It takes some practice, but anyone can make a change. So the first piece of good news is you are in complete control of what you put out to the Universe (in thoughts, words, and actions).

The second part of the definition states "whether wanted or unwanted." This means that the Universe does not know if you want or do not want something you are thinking or talking about. The Law of Attraction is a scientific law, like gravity. It does not make judgments about your thoughts or words. It merely reacts to them. The law of gravity works the same way. If I am standing at the top of a high diving board and I jump off, does the law of gravity know if I meant to jump off or if I accidentally fell? Does it care if I am a good person or not? Does it care about anything in my past or present condition? Of course it does not care about any of these things. Gravity takes over and sends my body speeding toward the water below. The Law of Attraction works in exactly the same way. It does not care if you want something or not. It does not matter if you are a good or bad person. The Law of Attraction pays no attention to any of these things. It simply matches whatever you focus on by giving you more. Hence, the second piece of good news is that no matter if you are rich or poor, fat or skinny, tall or short, black, white, red, or purple, you can still have the Law of Attraction bring into your life whatever you want. It does not matter what you did in the past, who you married, what your parents were like. You can start over right now. The final part of the definition says "I attract into my life." I attract into MY life. YOU attract into YOUR life. Tom attracts into Tom's life. Mary attracts into Mary's life. This can be a sticky point for many people when they first learn about the Law of Attraction. The implication is that you have created EVERYTHING in your life. The bad news is that you can no longer blame others for your problems. It is not the government's fault, or your parents' fault, or spouse's fault, or your teacher's fault. In fact, there is no one to blame, not even you. Now, the good news is you have the freedom to employ the Law of Attraction to your advantage. Just as the ancient Romans built aqueducts that used the law of gravity to move water thousands of miles, you can create your own life exactly the way you want it by using the Law of Attraction deliberately. You were playing a game without knowing the rules. Now that you know the rules, you can start winning.

So remember, the good news about the Law of Attraction is

  1. You have complete control over your thoughts, words, and actions.
  2. The Law of Attraction is a scientific law that simply reacts without judging like gravity. This means your past history and current situation do not matter. You can always start fresh.
  3. You now understand the rules and have the freedom to create your own life exactly the way you want it by using the Law of Attraction deliberately to your advantage.
